Safety & Handling
Methanol is a flammable liquid and is toxic by ingestion, inhalation and skin contact. Handle it to the SDS, not from memory. The SDS is available before you order.
Storage
- Closed, grounded containers in a ventilated, shaded area away from ignition sources, heat and oxidisers.
- Flammable-liquids storage class; keep bunded. Methanol fires burn with a near-invisible flame.
- Drums upright, bung closed, out of direct sun.
Transfer
- Bond and ground before transferring between containers.
- No open flames or spark sources in the transfer area; use rated equipment.
- Fixed storage: confirm the receiving connection and grounding before the lorry arrives.
PPE
- Chemical-resistant gloves (butyl or nitrile per SDS), splash goggles, flame-resistant clothing.
- Respiratory protection where vapour may exceed exposure limits — see the SDS.
Spill and exposure
- Eliminate ignition sources, ventilate, contain with inert absorbent. Methanol is water-miscible: do not flush to drains.
- Skin: wash with water. Eyes: flush 15 minutes. Ingestion or inhalation: medical attention immediately — methanol poisoning can be delayed.
